Walls and Sheetrock

The crew along with the help of several volunteers from Newberg Christian Church have been working towards putting up sheetrock on the walls in the western administration and reception areas. The Mezzanine level is being taped, mudded and sanded. The lower level has about two-thirds of the ceiling sheetrock installed. The pictures show some temporary lighting. Thank you to all who have taken some time to come over and help out.

Bare Rooms

Calling this post "Bare Rooms" because rooms are finally starting to emerge in the west entrance and administration areas. We got to the point where significant visual changes could be seen. With a lot of work over the past few months from the Thursday boys, work party from Adventure Christian Church in McMinnville, camp staff, and other volunteers the walls are going up making rooms out of empty space. Here is what it is starting to look like.

Framed

Work has been moving on the Missions Building project since the summer camping season concluded. Friends of Wi-Ne-Ma Day gave a big boost to the project as we started working in earnest on the remaining areas. The electrician has been in to run a number of the remaining circuits. The black paper has been installed over the mezzanine area allowing the rooms in the upstairs level to be framed in. The Fire Alarm plan is being reviewed and after the fire alarm system is installed we can start working on the downstairs and the bathrooms that will be part of the western end of the building.

Timely financial gifts and timely workers have made this possible as we look forward to having our offices and some restrooms in by the next camping season.

The summer camping season is drawing to a close. The summer youth camps are concluded. We still have Family Bible Conference, Singles Retreat, Septemberfest, and Friends of Wi-Ne-Ma Day before we come to a pretty full fall for retreat groups.

We haven't had much of a chance to do a lot with the Missions Building. But, there has been a bit of progress. Good news is that the stairs have been put in on both ends of the mezzanine. And, they have passed inspection. Other pictures are of work in the west and south entry ways.

Next up in September is to get the septic tanks put in which will allow us to proceed with plumbing and bathrooms. We also need to have some electrical work done as well as the conferences being over before we can start on the west end offices and mezzanine.

We are looking forward to Friends of Wi-Ne-Ma Day as giving a good donation boost for us to be able to continue on this winter as we have time now to get working on these other areas.

The Missions Building was a wonderful asset to the various programs this summer and we got a taste of how much more it can do once it is completed.

Has It Really Been This Long Since My Last Post

I have been gently reminded that there have not been any recent pictures put up of the progress in the Missions Building. We have had a number of volunteers in since the insulation was started. It took quite a while, but finally all the insulation in the Great Room was put up. Then the even more tedious part of covering the insulation with black paper (held up with tape and wire) really put the finishing touches on the room. Below is a picture of the room set up for 1st Jr. High Camp so you can see how the room turned out.

In other news we have had a volunteer couple in -- Marv and Jan Bullock, -- who, along with friends Hal Stewart, Frank Barnett, and Greg Gleason have built the second set of stairs, and have been working on the two entrances. The other pictures below show how the west entrance looks as it is being cased out. Their plan is to work on finishing this part of the project by staining the wood.

It is really looking sharp.

We have been registering the youth camps in the Missions Building and really appreciating the space. Next up in the project is to get some wiring done in anticipation of framing the west end administrative areas.

We are hoping for a drier fall so we can more easily dig in the septic tanks and start working on the restroom portion this winter.

Last weekend we had a group of guys from Mill City Christian Church come and start putting up the insulation in the ceiling. Thought it made things warmer and quieter. Today Phil and Pat are continuing the work. We are getting close to finishing the great room. We have the doors ready to put in. There is still some trim work to do, but, it is getting there.

We do have some volunteers coming in over the next couple of months as we turn from working on the Great Room to working on the office and entry areas. We probably are not going to be able to move our offices just yet, but we do plan to set up registration for the camps and conferences in the Missions Building.

We are close to finishing another important step in the Missions Building. Thanks to efforts by folks from Adventure Christian Church in McMinnville, Robert, Jason, and Luis from Newberg Christian Church, as well as the usual folks who form the Thursday volunteers, the Great Room sheetrock is up and textured. In a couple of weeks we are planning for the work party from Go, Inc. to finish the project by painting the room. With this the Great Room is mostly complete. The remaining items are doors and trim.

Thank you to all those who spent long hours getting this room to look as nice as it does. The bright atmosphere will greatly enhance all the great events to come in the buildng.

More Sanding

We have heat, now, in the Missions Building. A gas line might not look like much, but I know it will be appreciated by the winter groups. This coming weekend the plan is to finish the last coat of mud and sanding. Next weekend, Feb 13, we are looking forward to a group from Adventure Christian Church in McMinnville to come and paint the primer coat. Masking, then, in the weeks that follow and our sheet rock workers will return to apply the texture. We appreciate all those (especially Robert, Jason, and the Thursday volunteers) who have worked hard to make this a great looking room.

Taping and Mudding

We had a great day Saturday (January 9). A number of volunteers came by (folks from Newberg Christian Church and Wi-Ne-Ma Christian Church as well as some Wi-Ne-Ma Board Members) and the applied tape and the first coat of "mud" as we move towards finishing the walls in the Great Room. If all goes according to schedule they could be textured and ready to paint by the first weekend in February. Check back.

December Update

The last month or so we have been working on getting the sheetrock put up in the "Great Room." With assistance of work parties from Adventure Christian Church in McMinnville and Harrisburg Christian Church along with what I call the "Thursday Boys" we are about 3/4 done with this project. Today the Thursday Boys are working on the high part of the south wall. These pictures will give an idea of how that room is coming along.

You will also see that the heaters have been hung, but, they are not yet plumbed. You might notice that some basketball hoops have been put up as well. The groups that used the Camp in November were able to use the building for some of there play time.

It not wired or plumbed yet, but the first heater was set in place today. The second one should go up tomorrow. We hope to have them working in a couple of weeks.

It Has Been a While

I am sure it is an understatement that it has been a while since the last post and pictures. This set of pictures runs from newest to oldest. So, what has been accomplished since the end of August. Well, by Family Bible Conference the exhaust fan was installed in the East Wall. We also got the insulation put up in the perimeter walls, several young men from Newberg Christian Church did that messy job. Concurrent with that, strandboard was also put up around the perimeter of the Great Room (or Koinonium as one blog follower likes to call it).

We have also run some electrical conduit in anticipation of working on the west reception/administration areas.

After Family Bible Conference the next big thing was Friends of Wi-Ne-Ma Day. That event returned to the Missions Building. It worked really well to get the concert, silent auction, and oral auction all together again. The special project for Friends of Wi-Ne-Ma Day was raising money to insulate the ceiling and purchase the windows for the western entrance. A little over $14,000 was raised which should cover those costs. (If you would like to donate towards the overall Missions Building project you can do so online. Look for the link on the left.)

In the last month we have been assisted by the Thursday volunteers and by work parties from Adventure Christian Church and Harrisburg Christian Church. They have been putting up sheet rock. That task is about half done. Adventure is coming back in November to continue on with the sheet rock.

Phil has built some basketball backboards, so now we also have four hoops up. It only took me four tries to make a basket in the new building (it was a jump shot and not a lay in).

The next thing this week is for a couple of volunteers who will come in and put in one of the sets of stairs to the mezzanine.

Our goal this winter is to finish up the Great Room/Koinonium with insulation and finished walls, windows in the west entrance. By next summer we intend to finish the office/administration areas on the west end of the building and have the offices moved there.

Week of Missions

The start of Week of Missions. Although there is still quite a bit left to do, we were able to host the opening session of Week of Missions in the new building. It is gathering quite a few positive comments about the design and the features it will come to hold.

Week of Missions has gotten off to a great start. We are looking forward to the worship, fellowship, and the challenge as we spend this time considering what God is doing around the world through the lives of the various mission efforts represented this week.

Lots of Things Coming Together Right Now

Here we are in the midst of camp season and working like mad to keep going on the Missions Building. We are continuing to push to have the Great Room in some kind of shape to use for Week of Missions. Just what kind of shape we will know when the doors open on August 2.

A cool thing from 1st Jr. High Camp is this mural. We are backing the walls with strandboard, but until we get to the sheetrock, this mural will brighten the room.

Time for An Update

As we transitioned from May to June the pace at Camp has picked up quite a bit. There was the transition from hosting Outdoor Schools to hosting our summer camps. Christian Heritage Conference, Hispanic Family Camp and the first two youth camps have already moved through.

On the Missions Building, most of the effort in the last month has been on the sprinkler system and building the walls inside. We also have the conduit in the ground for the power company to eventually come and hook up the building. We have had a number of volunteers in doing some framing and sheeting the inside walls. The walls around the great room are what will be there according to the plans. Other walls are temporary to secure areas that won't be ready by Week of Missions.

In order to be as ready as we are going to be by Week of Missions, we need to have the sprinkler system and heating system installed and the electrical system installed for the Great Room. We are on schedule, but we also realize that we have just over a month to get that done. Thanks for your prayers and support.

Transition

We are kind of at that stage where the skin is on the building, but it is taking a while to get the inside on track. We are back to working on things that will be covered up. The underground stuff is getting worked on, getting the layouts and permits for the electrical lines to come into the building as well as the water line for the sprinkler system. One of the pictures below shows the new valve attached to the Camp's main water line. I also included a picture looking out across the Great Room from the second level of the office end of the building.

I see this as a time of transition because we are moving from being contractor dependent to assuming more responsibility for the actual construction. We are also gearing up for the transition from winter/spring to summer and the transition from retreat groups to our summer camps and conferences. The outside of the building won't look much different from now on. That is, until we install the windows in the front entryway and then when we finish up the parking and walkways around the outside. So, now we are looking for inner transformations. Some things to keep praying for are to get done what is necessary in order to use the Great Room by Week of Missions.

Then last Saturday a group of men from the Mill City Christian Church came and installed the decking on the mezzanine level of the administrative area. It was amazing and a blessing to see it all get installed in one day.

I've gotten behind in the updates on the Missions Building project. The last few weeks have seen the construction crew finishing up the edges. Now they are essentially done with their part of the project as we get ready to call for the structural inspection later on this week. The basic building is essentially done. Now it is time to turn towards the inside of the building. Next up is getting the sprinkler system installed and bringing in the utilities. Our next priority is to work towards getting the great room to a place where we might be able to use it.

I keep thinking that I will get to report that the construction crew is finished and now we can turn fully to working on the inside. Turns out that there are a lot of detail work to finishing up the outside. So, maybe by the end of next week. In the meanwhile, we have started installing doors, coordinating with the sprinkler company, and planning for the electrical and plumbing. For those who have had the opportunitiy to get down and see the building, they are pleased with how it is turning out. Now we can really visualize how the space will be put to use.

Almost There

Almost there. At the start of the week the plan was for the contractors to be done with the exterior of the building. They have been working on soffits, gutters, and downspouts along with the roof that goes over the west entrance. Well, they are almost there. A few days next week now they need to come in to finish up.

They have been a great crew, enjoyable to visit with and very hard working. The next phase involves the sprinkler system, framing walls, and power. We have some work parties and volunteers starting to come in to help us get the Camp ready for summer and to help with the next steps on the Missions Building. But at least we can say that by Easter (and since Labor Day), the building is practically up and closed in (well almost).

The last week or so has seen the crew "wrapping up" the building in siding. Took these pictures yesterday and by now they have finished the siding on the lower south side windows and are starting to put the trim on.

Here are some pictures from the end of last week. Thursday and Friday were really beautiful days, and, then the stormy weather came through on Saturday. But, now on Monday everybody is back into rain gear. Here's a picture of the "Thursday Boys" starting to frame in the south entrance. As we get into April the contract crews will be finished with their work and we will get into the phases of the building to be done by camp staff and volunteers. Now that the windows and doors are starting to be put in and the siding put on, we really are getting a good idea of how the building will take its place among the camp's facilities. I am looking forward to the day when the first group of campers play in the building and the first worship service held there.

It was a wild weekend weatherwise, but we were really blessed by the Mexico Missions work retreat. On the building, they came in and painted a bunch of the beams. But the pictures here are from the Friday before. In the next few weeks we expect to see the siding finished, windows and outside doors put in. Our attention is now turning to what needs to be done to get going on the inside stuff. Thanks for all your prayers and encouragement.

A new month brings greater anticipation about how the new building will serve in the Camp's ministry. The siding, doors, and windows should be installed by the time March goes out like a lamb (we hope), if not before. We are looking forward to a number of people coming in with Go, Inc (a Mexico Missions Trip planning event). One of their tasks will be to paint all of the red steel with a paint that we have found to be the most effective means to slow the rust down. We really have been blessed with mild weather since the first of the year and that has helped this stage of construction to move right along.

The crew started putting the roof on last Wednesday, and, here they are just a few days later almost done with the north side as well. It was a nice day so I walked up the trail to get a couple of pictures from that vantage point. After they have finished the roofing, we will be working to install doors and windows with the siding. They do still have to put the roof on the storage area, the south entrance, and the west entrance.

Once the siding is completed then it is going to come back to us to do all the finishing work inside the building. We are looking forward to severak work parties coming up this spring to give a big boost to the project.

Covering Up

It has been kind of a wild week for the weather. We flirted with snow. A high wind warning was issued. But, looking back it has actually been a rather mild week as the crew started to put the roof on. As of today they are a little over halfway down the south side. The other development this weekend was picking up most of the windows for the building. A friend of the Camp helped us get these windows -- so Thanks! We are looking forward to some work parties coming in March and April as the contracted workers will be pretty much done in March.

There have been so many folks praying and giving and working, devoting themselves to finishing this project. As registrations are starting to come in for the summer events we are looking forward to how God continues to be our hope and strength in this ministry.

Not Really a Slow Week in February

The weather has been rather unsettled the last two days. Snow, then rain, then sunshine -- then a little bit of all three with the wind thrown in as well. Not quite so dramatic changes in the last few days. The construction crew is putting the final touches on that prepares the structure for receiving the roof. The plan today is start putting the roofing panels on on Thursday. They say the only weather problem will be if the wind is blowing. So that is our prayer and hope is for mild days coming up once this predicted storm blows through.

We really have been blessed with some beautiful and calm weather while the steel pieces are being put together. Now they are working on purlins and girts. The plan is to start putting the roof on next week. Doors and windows have been ordered which need to be installed with the siding.

Taking Shape

The first few days they worked on putting up the structure were just beautiful, but today turned out to be on the rainy side. We heard from some of view that got snow today. So here the building is taking shape. You can kind of see the west section where the reception and administrative are will be. On the north side; the concrete for the storeroom. Then on the south side the concrete is poured for the direct entrance into the main room. The upoured part on either side is where the restrooms will be.

The crew is planning for the structure to be up with roof, siding, windows, and doors by the middle of March. Stay tuned to see.

The concrete work is completed and we have had a couple of beautiful days at the Coast. The next construction crew arrived and started setting up the posts. For reference, you might go back in this series to see the concrete blocks that each of these will attach to. Each step has had its challenges and blessings as we have worked through the stages. But, now it is especially exciting to get to watch the new Missions Building take shape.

As we are going through this project there is an aspect to the project that keeps coming up. When a certain part is completed we breathe a sigh of relief and look forward to the next step. Today is one of those check off points. The crew got in and finished pouring the slab. While they will continue to work through the day to finish the surface of the slab, the concrete work is definitely a big check off point. Next week the construction crew will be in to put the building up. So, by some time in March we should have a building with walls, roof, doors, and windows . . . and little else. But, that will be tremendous. After that point we won't be quite so contractor reliant. We will also be looking forward to those who would like to come alongside and help as we work on the finishing portions.

Our goal is to have the main room useable (might be a loose definition) by Week of Missions. The next priority is to finish the restrooms and entrance on the south side of the building. When those two areas are completed we will look to finishing the west end entrance, reception, and administration areas.

Ready for the Weather to Cooperate

Just a little update as most of us are waiting out the winter storms. This week backfill and compaction work was completed and passed by the engineers. The concrete contractors were out yesterday to finish getting ready for pouring the slab. So, now their comment is that as soon as we have a clear day above freezing we'll pour the slab. This morning has been a mixture of sun and snow. Sun earlier, snow now. Bigger storm forecast for tomorrow. But for now, here are some pictures from earlier this morning.

Getting to Work

While the forecast is for snow this weekend, we keep plugging away on getting the concrete work done. The perimeter walls have been poured and while the contractor is getting ready to backfill and preparing the site for pouring the slab, Phil, Tay, and Salvador are laying the drain lines. Here's some pictures.

More Foundation work

Today turned out nice, sunny, calm, and clear. The contractors have worked over the last week putting in the perimeter forms and then today, those perimeter forms actually were poured. It went really fast. The next step is to strip the forms in a day or so. Then we need to have the main area smoothed out and compacted. A rebar grid gets installed, then they are ready to pour the slab. They say that when they are ready to pour the slab all they need is a 24 hour window of clear weather.

Our prayer and hope is that this can be done by Christmas. Then the outfit will come in to actually start putting the building up. They think they can have it up with the roof on by the end of January.

We will see.

It is also fun to remember that at this time last year we were being hammered by 100 mph winds that knocked down a bunch of trees and the power to Camp for several days. So, I also included a couple of "nice" pictures to tell everyone that this is what Camp always looks like in December.

Here you can see the basic shape of the building. Where it bumps out on the north is a store room and where it bumps out on the south is the entry way and restrooms. The rest of the perimeter matches up with the old Missions Building dimensions.

Freshly Poured Concrete

The day started off rainy, but ended up sort of sunny. This morning the pumper truck arrived along with the concrete crew. Soon the cement trucks started showing up and they poured all the big blocks that will support the new Missions Building.

This pumper truck had a tremendous reach; could almost reach all the way across the building, but they ended up having to move it to reach the blocks on the east end. Once the building is up you won't see these blocks, but when all is said and done this building will have some deep roots and solid anchors.

Ready to Pour

Ready to pour had a couple of meanings this week. Tuesday and Wednesday we got a "bunch" of rain. The sky was ready and it poured.

Thursday and Friday have been just beautiful and even warm days. The folks working on the concrete forms have finished the first stage of forming the concrete blocks that anchor the various steel posts. These forms passed inspection and now we are scheduled to start pouring concrete on Monday!!

When that happens we will get some pictures put up of that process as well. We are going to be putting in the concrete in three steps - first the blocks, then the perimeter, and the slab last. Then once the slab cures we can start on putting up the building.

Galatians 4:19

The concrete guys have been working this week to place forms creating the blocks where the steel beams will attach. So, when you look at these pictures, each of these holes is a place where the building will be anchored.

It put me in mind of the purpose of forms. The forms create the desired shape for the concrete. Instead of oozing wherever the prevailing forces guide it, the form shapes the concrete according to its intended use.

In Galatians 4:19, the apostle Paul writes about his labor toward the end that "Christ be formed" in the Galatian Christians. Maybe it is that Christian ministry is about helping people take shape in a way that Christ be used. One way to look at it, is that we are the shell of the form and Christ becomes the content. Another way is to see that we are the geletinous mass being formed into the image of Christ.

Either way, it seems evident that Christ needs to be at work in our lives and ministry to transform us while transforming this world.

Readiness and Anticipation

The words "readiness" and "anticipation" characterize where we are today with the Missions Building Project. The demolition and site preparation is completed. The steel building package has been delivered. What you see here are the dig outs for the footing. We are still working on some scheduling with the concrete contractor, but we plan to pour these footings starting late this week or the early part of the following week. A part of this will be the proper placement of the bolts that attach the building to its foundation. So today, all lays waiting in anticipation and readiness.

The last few weeks have mostly been about preparing the site and getting some of the final foundation details ironed out. It was pretty exciting today as the building package arrived. It took four trucks, but now we have a yard full of pieces. We also got to work with the men who will be putting the building together.

Still need prayer and support for some more details to get worked out -- specifically prayer for the various contractors' timing and for continued mild weather. But we know God is good and the different pieces of this project will come together at the right time.

Here are several views of the site after this week's activities. The site is pretty well cleaned up. Now we are working on creating the runways for the equipment and setting up to start digging the foundation trenches. Thanks for your prayers and support as a lot of things are coming together now.

What's happening today includes Tillamook PUD arriving to move the power pole across the road from its current location. It was necessary to move the pole as the existing power lines were too close to the building. Here are a couple of pictures of TPUD at work.

We had a great Friends of Wi-Ne-Ma Day on the 13th. Good turnout including a number of those who worked on the original Missions Building. Here are a few more pictures to show where we are this week.

This was the scene on Friday, the fifth day of demolition of the Missions Building. They brought in a "tub grinder" and it is grinding the waste wood to be hauled away by the semi-truck load.

Well Begun is Half Done

The demolition crew moved in Monday and by 2:00 the north wall of the Missions Building caved in with a nudge from the excavator. Now the crew is sorting in about 4 piles - lumber that is still basically intact, broken lumber and plywood, metal, and garbage like tar paper and insulation. They plan to take about three weeks to clean up and prepare the site so check back every so often for a new view.

Septemberfest is in now, so the folks are enjoying the show. Here are some pictures from the last couple of days.

Here We Go!!

Family Bible Conference closed with a wonderful acknowledgement of the start to the Missions Building project. Clark Tanner of Beaverton Christian Church who was one of the featured speakers, invited the group to form a circle around the Missions Building and prayer was offered as we look forward to physical construction. Then the group started moving chairs out of the building. A steady stream flowed from the Missions Building to the old Snack Shack where we are storing a bunch of stuff.

Demolition has begun. The porches were taken off in August and we are salvaging that material. Several volunteers were in Tuesday-Friday this week to take down the ceiling panels. The demolition contractor is scheduled next. In the next few weeks the look will change quite a bit as we actually start this project. We can use your prayers and support as the physical part of this construction project begins.
